Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Shil Patel attended high school in Temecula and graduated with honors from the University of California Berkeley with a distinction in Molecular and Cell Biology/Cell and Developmental Biology. While completed his medical degree at The Chicago Medical School, he became a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha. Returning to Phoenix for his internal medicine internship at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Dr. Patel successfully completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2010. In June of 2012, Dr. Patel completed his vitreoretinal fellowship at Associated Retina Consultants in Phoenix, Arizona.
He was involved with novel research involving the intravitreal safety of caspofungin and posaconazole in an animal model during his residency. He won the Milton Boniuk Research Grant in 2008. He has presented at the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO) Annual Meeting twice, the latest topic being Nepafenac and Cystoid Macular Edema.
